Change is in the air! As of August 24, 2026, YouTube has changed how it calculates creator views. So, what exactly is changing? There is no longer a minimum watch time required for a view to be registered; from now on, YouTube counts a view as soon as the first frame is displayed.

And to keep things fair, this rule applies to all formats, whether it's long-form videos, Shorts, podcasts, or even live streams. Public view counts are likely to rise quickly as a result.

However, views for videos published before this update will not be recalculated or modified.

What does this mean for creators?

There is no real impact on advertising revenue or monetization criteria.

To calculate video earnings, actual engagement and watch time will remain the primary metrics. The same applies to ads: for them to be viewed and therefore generate revenue, users will still need to watch for a longer duration.

Be wary of misleading numbers, though. While a higher view count can be beneficial, the average percentage of the video watched will mathematically drop if users leave quickly.

To evaluate the success of their content, creators should now focus on the new metric of "engaged views", which measures actual attention.

Opinions on this update are mixed.

While some see a commercial advantage, believing it will give them more leverage with brands, others are more skeptical and fear inflated numbers that could devalue the worth of a single view. However, TikTok and Instagram already counted views very quickly, and for many, it seemed logical for YouTube to adopt the same rules.

For the audience, there is a fear of clickbait. Users worry that YouTubers will double down on exaggerated titles and misleading thumbnails just to snag that first click, which now counts as a view.
